This course provides the foundational knowledge required to maintain a safe navigational watch in accordance with STCW and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs). Students learn the responsibilities of the watchkeeper, proper lookout procedures, the application of COLREGs in various encounter situations, and the use of lights, shapes, and sound signals. Emphasis is placed on situational awareness, correct interpretation of collision-avoidance rules, and the ability to take timely and appropriate action to ensure the safety of the vessel and other traffic.
