This course provides advanced knowledge and competencies required for officers and crew serving on oil, chemical, and liquefied gas tankers. It expands upon basic tanker safety training and focuses on the safe operation, handling, and emergency response associated with tanker cargoes, in accordance with STCW mandatory requirements.
Students gain a deep understanding of the properties and hazards of tanker cargoes, including flammability, toxicity, reactivity, pollution risk, and cryogenic behavior. Emphasis is placed on the operational and safety systems unique to tankers, ensuring students are prepared to participate in and oversee cargo operations safely and effectively.
Core topics include:
-
Tanker design, construction, and cargo containment systems
-
Advanced cargo handling operations, including loading, discharging, stripping, tank cleaning, gas freeing, and inerting
-
Cargo measurement, temperature control, and pressure management
-
Hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe working practices
-
Pollution prevention, MARPOL compliance, and emergency spill response
-
Gas detection, sampling, and atmospheric monitoring
-
Inert gas systems, cargo heating, and venting arrangements
-
Emergency procedures, including fire control, cargo system failures, and response to spills or leaks
