This course builds on previous Maritime English training, focusing on advanced application of the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP). Emphasis is placed on clear, concise, and standardized communication essential for safe navigation and ship operations. Students will practice both spoken and written communication relevant to routine and emergency situations at sea.
The module covers the following core areas:
• SMCP Part 4, Chapter A – Operative Ship Handling
Students will develop proficiency in the communication required for maneuvering operations, including engine orders, helm commands, tug assistance, anchoring, unmooring, and berthing procedures. Exercises emphasize clarity, correct phrase structure, and situational awareness.
• SMCP Part 4.3 (Chapter A) – Wheel Orders and Handover of Watch
Learners will practice giving and repeating helm orders accurately, acknowledging commands, and reporting steering performance. The course also trains students in proper watch handover procedures, ensuring continuity, safety, and compliance with bridge management standards.
• SMCP Part 3.4 – Pilotage Communications
This section introduces standardized phrases used during pilot boarding, pilot/master exchange, manoeuvring with a pilot onboard, and communication with tugs and traffic services. Students will work with real-life scenarios to strengthen their understanding of pilotage terminology and protocols.
