This course provides the knowledge and proficiency required to perform celestial observations and position calculations in accordance with STCW navigation standards. Training includes the use of height tables and calculator-adapted formulae, determining the vessel’s position from the observed heights of the sun and stars, and identifying principal celestial bodies. Students also learn compass checking and error determination using celestial observations, as well as daily navigational routines carried out on board. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, proper observation techniques, and integrating celestial navigation into safe watchkeeping practices.
