Exhaust Gas Scrubbers & Sulphur Cap Compliance

This course addresses the stringent international regulations governing air pollution from ships, specifically focusing on the MARPOL Annex VI global sulphur cap, which limits the sulphur content in marine fuel oil to a maximum of 0.50% (and 0.10% within Emission Control Areas). It explains how maritime operators can legally comply with these rules by utilizing Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS), commonly known as scrubbers, which treat the ship’s engine exhaust gases with washwater to chemically remove sulphur oxides before they hit the atmosphere. The training covers the technical operation, chemistry, and maintenance of open-loop, closed-loop, and hybrid scrubber systems, alongside the critical logging, monitoring, and washwater discharge criteria required to pass strict Port State Control inspections.
