This course provides practical, highly detailed training on the systematic physical search techniques required to prevent weapons, explosives, narcotics, and unauthorized stowaways from breaching a vessel’s security perimeter. It trains crew members how to methodically inspect three primary risk vectors: checking crew personnel and their living quarters, screening incoming ship stores (provisions and spare parts), and searching visitor or passenger baggage.
The curriculum places a massive emphasis on standard search patterns to ensure no hidden compartment or blind spot is overlooked, while teaching the correct operation of security equipment like metal detectors, explosive-trace sniffer devices, and handheld mirrors. Additionally, the course covers the legal and cultural sensitivities of conducting body and property searches, instructing mariners how to maintain professionalism, document findings accurately, and safely isolate and preserve evidence if a security threat or contraband is discovered.
