This course delivers essential operational safety guidelines and tactical knowledge for executing complex ship-assist towage operations under varying environmental conditions. Participants will study the hydrodynamics of tug interaction, the mechanics of modern tug designs (such as ASD and tractor tugs), and the specific forces exerted on mooring and towing equipment.
The training places a heavy emphasis on mitigating the high-risk hazards associated with tug connection and disconnection, identifying snap-back zones, and recognizing the critical dangers of tug girding. Deck officers will learn effective communication protocols between the ship’s bridge, the deck crew, and the tug master, ensuring precise line handling, rigorous risk assessment, and safe maneuvering during harbor entry, berthing, and unberthing operations.
