This course focuses on the scientific principles of human factors and the implementation of robust error management frameworks within maritime operations. Participants will study the psychological and physiological drivers behind human error, examining how fatigue, cognitive overload, situational stress, and complacency compromise human reliability on the bridge and in the engine room.
Rather than viewing human error as a simple failure of discipline, the training teaches officers and shore-based managers how to treat error as a systemic symptom. Utilizing the Swiss Cheese Model of accident causation, participants will learn to design and implement organizational defenses, standardize critical verification checklists, and build effective redundancy systems. The course equips maritime leaders with the tools to analyze operational slips, mistakes, and violations objectively, shifting from a culture of blame to a proactive “Just Culture” that identifies hidden systemic vulnerabilities and actively prevents minor errors from cascading into major maritime incidents.
