This course provides the knowledge and proficiency required to perform basic celestial navigation in accordance with STCW navigation standards. Training includes the principles of celestial navigation, the system of celestial co-ordinates, and the use of the Nautical Almanac and sight reduction tables. Students learn the height method, sextant operation and corrections, and the calculation of observed and computed heights. The course also covers time systems, time conversions, and the determination of local hour angle and declination of celestial bodies. Emphasis is placed on applying these methods to obtain reliable position information and support safe navigation.
