Stowaway Prevention & Management

175,00

This course addresses the severe financial, legal, and operational liabilities that arise when unauthorized individuals secret themselves on board a vessel. It trains crew members on the critical timing of stowaway prevention searches, which must be methodically executed immediately prior to departure from any port, focusing on high-risk areas like steering gear flats, chain lockers, void spaces, and empty cargo holds.

The second half of the curriculum is dedicated to the humane and legally compliant management of stowaways once discovered at sea. It covers securing them in a safe, dignified compartment, ensuring they receive basic provisions, and conducting non-coercive interviews to establish their identity and nationality. Crucially, the training guides ship masters through the complex international legal frameworks—specifically coordinating with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines, flag state authorities, and Protection and Indemnity (P&I) clubs—to arrange for safe repatriation at the next appropriate port of call while preventing costly vessel detentions or asylum complications.
