This course provides critical survival training on the final, absolute worst-case measure taken during a maritime catastrophe: abandoning the vessel. It guides crew members through the strict, step-by-step emergency sequence, beginning with the sounding of the “Abandon Ship” verbal command and general alarm, followed by the rapid, orderly assembly of crew and passengers at designated muster stations with their lifejackets and immersion suits. The training heavily focuses on the mechanics and safety protocols of launching various survival craft—including gravity-draped lifeboats, free-fall lifeboats, and inflatable liferafts—under severe vessel lists, heavy weather, and high-stress conditions. Ultimately, it ensures that every mariner develops the muscle memory and procedural knowledge needed to safely clear the sinking vessel, release hook mechanisms, and operate survival equipment to maintain life at sea until rescue arrives.
