This course addresses one of the most persistent and deadly hazards in the maritime industry: entering unventilated, sealed compartments like cargo holds, ballast tanks, fuel tanks, and chain lockers. Because these spaces frequently suffer from oxygen depletion, toxic gas accumulation, or flammable vapors, the training focuses heavily on the mandatory pre-entry safety checklist. This includes mechanical ventilation, atmospheric testing with multi-gas detectors, and securing a formal Permit to Work (PTW). Crucially, the second half of the course trains the crew on emergency rescue operations, teaching them how to safely deploy a rescue team with a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), use extraction tripods and stretchers, and administer immediate first aid without becoming casualties themselves.
